Personal branding is what separates you from your competition. It gives you a unique presence online that is more recognizable, which allows you to build your authority on certain subjects. If you’re running a business, it will help you establish who you are in the industry, which will help your audience trust you more.

But how do you get started with creating your own personal brand?

In today’s post, I’m going to walk you through how you can create and establish your own personal branding.

What is personal branding and why is it important?

A personal brand is your unique online persona. It combines your skills, and your line of work to create a relatable image that people will associate with you and potential business. Think about it as your online professional portfolio that everyone can view at any given time.

Except, it allows your audience a better look into what you stand for, and what you do.

The reason why it’s so important is because it allows you to create a network on top of establishing yourself as an authority figure in your niche or industry.

Think about it, when you imagine some of the most successful online figures, what do they all have in common?

They’ve built a brand around themselves, and people cling to it.

In the age of all similar content and lack of new resources, the only thing you can cling to is your individuality. This is mostly why an audience is more responsive to a person’s profile as opposed to a company account.

This is caused by a variety of reasons:

  • Showing humanity will allow people to more easily connect with you and relate to your content.

  • It raises your viewer’s trust because it puts you directly in their eyesight.

  • Nobody wants to interact with a corporate account.

Maintaining a consistent personal brand is important. However, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t leave room for improvement.

The whole idea is to give your audience a glimpse into how you grow consistently and how you handle certain situations, especially if you’re under a lot of stress.

How do I build a personal brand?

There are plenty of ways you can get started. In fact, it’s one of those things where it doesn’t really matter what tactic you’re using, as long as you cover all bases.

Building a personal brand can be very difficult especially when you don’t know where to start. To save you from the frustration, i'll tell you about the different steps I’ve gathered from my sources like OnlineBiz Booster to make the process at least a bit smoother.

Decide on your brand name

Will you be sticking to your name exclusively? Will you be creating a stage name? Will you create an umbrella name that you’ll use to brand your content?

These are the questions you should start asking yourself. Deciding on your brand name is very important. You do not want to change it later, especially when you’ve already begun to build a presence online as this will only confuse your already active audience. Not to mention, it will also make you look more than just a little bit suspicious.

Choosing your brand name is an incredibly intimate process. Make sure it’s easy to follow and remember, but you also need to make sure that it’s catchy and unique enough that you won’t get mistaken for someone else.

A good idea would be to create a play on your name connected to your industry like DigitalMila does.

Create your brand voice

Do you want to be a stern professional, a friendly joker, or a fun professional? Personally, I prefer the third option as it gives off a great balance. But it’s all up to you. Just make sure your personality shines through and that you’re being your own authentic self.

You will need to keep up with this as your career progresses as well. This should be applied not only to your customer interactions, but it should extend to your content, and emails as well.

Decide on your brand image

Think about your logo, your typefaces, and everything else. This will help you really pull together your brand and make it stick to people. One of the best current marketing tactics on social media today is incorporating a unique emoji with your business.

This essentially lets you be subconsciously recognizable to your audience once they see it getting used elsewhere. Make sure you’re careful though, you don’t want to be mistaken for someone else.

Invest in your skills

Your expertise is the main selling point of your brand. And even though it’s not the first on this list, you need to be aware that it’s one of the most important things you need to start considering today.

Your skills should be at full display as much as you can. If you’re in the graphic design industry, make sure you share your work as much as possible. This will not only showcase what you do, but it also solidifies what you’re capable of to your audience.

Determine your USP

Your unique selling proposition is what will set you apart from similar brands in your industry. This will act as your bait, and will let your potential clients know what they can expect of you that they won’t find anywhere else.

When I was starting out, I didn’t know about this, and I have to say it severely impacted my efforts. Now that I know better, you should give this a lot of thought as well.

Final thoughts

There are many ways you can go about building your personal brand. And if you want to succeed on the online scene, then I suggest you take it very seriously. It might seem daunting, but the only thing you need to keep in mind is that you should focus on putting as much of you as possible in your brand, After all, your brand revolves around you, and not the other way around!

Some of my top tips are to maintain a consistent voice, and invest in showcasing your skills as much as possible where you can. This will help you rise above your competitors.
